Tonight Allan had a hard game. He was playing against 2 of his very good friends. The other team was also undefeated going in to tonight. It was an intense game, emotions were high on all sides. Of course as a parent you want your child to succeed, but you walk a fine line when it is friends, and especially when you also love the friend's moms :-) It was an intense game and as a parent you work on not getting too in to it. The one point that made it hard was the other team had a young man who had a problem slapping other kids in the face full on. I know it is hard for the refs to catch everything, but this was just disturbing and quite obvious. One girl lost her glasses right off her face due to this kid, when the game was actually stopped. Just so hard to watch a girl cry and the kid was so unaware of what the problem was. Everyone clapped for her when she walked off and this kid is dancing and claps at the end of it when everyone was done. Two minutes later he did it again. As a parent, I feel it is partly the coach's responsibility to guide this young man and teach him, especially during the game. This is what the coach signed up for. Talk to the child explain the situation and help him understand. Also the parents come on the backend and deal with it at home. If that had been my child I guarantee that we would have dealt with it and his coach would have said something. I am thankful for Coach Z who is awesome with the kids and works on making them better by accentuating the positive. We were ahead and looking like we would win and then in the last 4 seconds the other team scored and we lost by one point. It was heartbreaking, but Coach Z emphasized to the kids that it was the best game they had played against an extremely hard team. What a great message to these kids. It helps them in life as well as sports.
We did have one incident when Allan's very good friend was hurt. He was laying down on the ground, holding his knee and crying. I saw Mom jump up to go to him and Dad push her back gently and head out to him. So I sat with Mom while they were checking him out and just talked to her and rubbed her back. This is the key for me. No matter what team anyone is on, all that matters is that our boys are okay.
Also today I was asked to work on a committee for the PTO. Nothing major, just a small job, but I am excited. Thanks Jenn for thinking of me!!
Rest your head friends and sleep well.
